Why Decorate Your Home With Bismillah Wall Art?

A Muslim begins any task, whether big or small, routine or out of the ordinary, with the Name of Allah. He says ‘Bismillah’ or ‘Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem’ which means ‘In the Name of Allah’ or ‘In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful’ respectively. Be it something as everyday as eating lunch or going to work, or as life-changing as going for a critical medical surgery or signing a marriage document, a Muslim must begin it in the Beautiful Name of Allah. Because of the importance of ‘Bismillah’ in the life of a Muslim, it is not uncommon to find the verse written in a calligraphic style and framed as wall art in a Muslim home. It is quite likely that someone or the other might be typing on Google ‘best  Bismillah art’ or ‘best Bismillah art online’.

What is the importance of ‘Bismillah’?

‘Bismillah-ir-Raham-ir-Raheem’ is the opening verse of the Holy Quran. It is also the first verse of all the chapters of the Holy Quran, except for one chapter. These two factsare significant indicators of its importance. If the Word of Allah begins with this verse, why should not a mere mortal begin his or her every task, indeed his or her day, with ‘Bismillah’?

Apart from the aforementioned textual reasons for the primacy of ‘Bismillah’, given below are the essence and virtues of saying the verse.

Sheikh Maududi, in his much-referenced detailed commentary (tafseer) of the Holy Quran, has said:

  1. (Saying Bismillah) allows one to guard oneself against any evil, since the habit of pronouncing the name of God is bound to make one wonder when about to attempt some misdeed and how such an act can be reconciled with the saying of God’s holy name.
  2. When a person begins something by pronouncing Allah’s (God’s) name (with sincerity in his heart), he will enjoy Allah’s support and help; Allah will bless his efforts and protect him from the machinations and temptation of Satan. For whenever man turns to Allah (God), Allah turns to him as well.

Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid, another well-known Islamic scholar, explained it quite well: “When one says ‘Bismillaah’ before starting anything, it means, ‘I start this action accompanied by the Name of Allah or seeking help through the Name of Allah, seeking blessing thereby. Allah is God, the beloved and worshipped, to Whom hearts turn in love, veneration, and obedience (worship). He is al-Rahmaan (the Most Gracious) Whose attribute is vast mercy; and al-Raheem (the Most Merciful) Who causes that mercy to reach His creation.’

It is amply clear from the above two scholarly explanations that ‘Bismillah’ pervades the life of every believing, practising Muslim across the globe. It is therefore no surprise then that Bismillah art is much sought after in Islamic home décor. Many Muslims search for ‘best Bismillah art’ or ‘best Bismillah art online’ because they wantto be reminded of the Name and the Blessings of Allah all the time at their home or office.
